Flood Insurance -- Often Misunderstood !

One of the biggest misconceptions about homeowner's insurance is that it covers the peril of flood.  A homeowner's insurance policy does NOT cover damage from flood.  Floodwater has the power to damage your home and your sense of security.  In order to protect your home from flood damage, you must buy flood insurance, a policy separate and apart from your homeowner's insurance policy.  If you have a mortgage and depending on the location of your property, your lender may require you to have flood insurance.  Generally, it is better for you to buy your own flood insurance policy rather than have the lender place the coverage on your behalf and bill you for it.  Remember, too, that in most cases, there is a 30-day waiting period from the time you buy the flood insurance policy to when coverage actually takes effect.
